Material Selection Guide

Not sure which material to choose? Compare the most common options below. Final suitability depends on the part geometry, load, environment and exact material grade. Arkonix will review your request and confirm the recommended material before production.

Visual & general purpose

PLA

A practical material for visual models, concept prototypes and decorative parts.

Common uses

Mock-ups, display models, housings, signs and low-load indoor parts.

  • Good surface quality
  • Many colours
  • Rigid
  • Cost-effective

Note: Not recommended for high temperatures or long-term outdoor use.

Versatile functional material

PETG

A balanced choice for durable everyday functional components.

Common uses

Brackets, holders, enclosures, adapters and moisture-exposed parts.

  • Tough
  • Moisture resistant
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Slightly flexible

Note: Less rigid than PLA and may deform under sustained heat or load.

High-impact functional material

PCTG

A tougher alternative to PETG for parts requiring improved impact resistance.

Common uses

Protective housings, functional prototypes, containers and durable components.

  • High toughness
  • Impact resistant
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Good finish

Note: It is more flexible and less rigid than some engineering materials.

Outdoor & UV resistant

ASA

An engineering plastic intended for outdoor and weather-exposed components.

Common uses

Outdoor brackets, automotive components, covers, housings and ventilation parts.

  • UV resistant
  • Weather resistant
  • Heat resistant
  • Durable

Note: Final suitability still depends on load, wall thickness and operating temperature.

Technical general purpose

ABS

A tough technical plastic suitable for many functional indoor applications.

Common uses

Machine housings, fixtures, tools, prototypes and replacement components.

  • Tough
  • Heat resistant
  • Impact resistant
  • Can be post-processed

Note: For long-term outdoor use, ASA is generally the better option.

Flexible

TPU

A flexible material for parts that must bend, grip, cushion or absorb impact.

Common uses

Pads, seals, bumpers, protective covers, grips and vibration-damping parts.

  • Flexible
  • Elastic
  • Impact resistant
  • Abrasion resistant

Note: Flexibility depends on the selected Shore hardness and part geometry.

High-performance engineering

PC / PC Blend

A strong and heat-resistant engineering material for demanding functional parts.

Common uses

Machine components, strong brackets, tools, fixtures and heat-exposed housings.

  • Very tough
  • High strength
  • Heat resistant
  • Engineering grade

Note: Exact properties vary significantly between PC and different PC Blend grades.

Carbon-fibre reinforced

PETG-CF

PETG reinforced with carbon fibre for increased rigidity and dimensional stability.

Common uses

Stiff brackets, fixtures, technical enclosures, jigs and functional prototypes.

  • Rigid
  • Dimensionally stable
  • Matte finish
  • Reduced warping

Note: Less flexible than standard PETG and not ideal where repeated bending is required.

Tough & wear resistant

PA / Nylon

A durable engineering material with excellent fatigue and abrasion resistance.

Common uses

Gears, bushings, clips, hinges, moving parts and mechanical components.

  • Tough
  • Wear resistant
  • Fatigue resistant
  • Slightly flexible

Note: Nylon absorbs moisture, which can influence dimensions and material behaviour.

Carbon-fibre reinforced nylon

PA-CF

Nylon reinforced with carbon fibre for stiff, lightweight technical components.

Common uses

Jigs, fixtures, automotive parts, machine components and structural brackets.

  • High rigidity
  • Lightweight
  • Dimensionally stable
  • Good heat performance

Note: It is less flexible than standard nylon and is intended mainly for rigid technical parts.

Decorative

WoodFill

A PLA-based composite with wood fibres for a natural wood-like appearance.

Common uses

Decorative objects, signs, gifts, interior products and display pieces.

  • Wood-like finish
  • Decorative
  • Can be sanded
  • Natural appearance

Note: Not intended for high mechanical loads, heat or prolonged moisture exposure.
